Nominations Sought for Annual Democratic Party Awards

The Sonoma County Democratic Party is seeking nominations for their annual awards (to be presented at the 2012 Crab Feed) from the Democratic community. All nominations will be screened and recommendations for each award category will be made to the Sonoma County Democratic Party Central Committee, along with a list of all nominees.

At the January 10 SCDP Central Committee meeting, members will discuss the merits of each candidate, culminating in a vote by secret ballot for one person for each award category.

Please review the award categories and the requirements for each. Write a brief statement giving the qualifications of your nominee and your reasons for nominating.

Nominations must be received by December 31, 2011 for consideration.

Return nominations to the SCDP electronically at info@sonomacountydemocrats.org or by U.S. mail to Sonoma County Democratic Party, P.O. Box 3727, Santa Rosa, CA 95401

Award Categories and Requirements  **All Nominees Must Be Registered Democrats**

1. Democrat of the Year Award

Requirements: Male or Female – Outstanding Service to the Democratic Party 2011-2012
-
2. Young Democrat of the Year Award

Requirements: Male or Female, age 18-35, with at least 2 years of active service to the Democratic Party

3. Roberta Hallowell Award

Requirements: Female with at least 10 years of service to the Democratic Party

This award was created in memory of Roberta Hallowell, who was a leader in the Democratic community and a member of many organizations. As a retired teacher, education was one of her passions. She was active in the California Teachers Association, National Education Association, the Sonoma County Educators Council, and the Healdsburg Area Teachers Association. Other affiliations included National Organization for Women, Sierra Club, NAACP, National Women’s Political Caucus and California State Democratic Central Committee. Her union work and liberal politics probably started as a family trait, but Roberta blazed her own path and was a mainstay of the Sonoma County Democratic Party. Throughout her life she was active in a host of issues that benefited from her skills and contacts.

Occupy Wall Street Events in Santa Rosa and Sonoma

Friends,

At last night's (October 11, 2011) Central Committee meeting, the Sonoma County Democratic Party voted unanimously to support the Occupy Wall Street movement and to support local actions by the Occupy Movement in the Bay Area. That support includes the actions planned in the City of Sonoma on Friday, October 14 and in Santa Rosa on Saturday, October 15.

Based on my conversations with some of the local organizers -- who have a strong desire to maintain the "non-partisan" nature of these actions and some of whom have expressed concern that their effort may be co-opted by others now that they are gaining steam -- the local party will be promoting attendance by our volunteers, expressing our support on our own web page and many members of the leadership of the local party are planning to attend some or all of the local events.

We will not issue a press release or display party signs at any Occupy events. We will not be speaking at any events and will not seek the opportunity to speak.

As we discussed at the Central Committee meeting -- this movement arose spontaneously and has largely been organized by young people who have not been involved in organized political activities before. This gives a very important opportunty for those of us over 50 and others who are already "in the mainstream" and who have our own organizational agendas firmly established to LISTEN and LEARN.

I encourage all of us who are so deeply involved in politics to listen closely to the next generation of leaders who have stepped forward in the Occupy movement.

I hope that you will support Occupy Sonoma & Occupy Santa Rosa actions this week.

All my best,

Stephen Gale, Chair, Sonoma County Democratic Party
